Connect & Use a USB Postal Scale

Connect a USB postal scale to automatically import accurate weights when creating NetStamps, envelopes, and shipping labels.

Most USB scales connect through Stamps.com Connect, which enables Stamps.com to read weights directly from your scale and apply them to your mailpieces and shipments.

Get Started

  • Before connecting your scale, make sure your computer and scale are powered on and that you're signed in to Stamps.com.

  • Scale setup requires Stamps.com Connect. If it is not already installed, you'll be prompted to download it during setup.

Connect Your Postal Scale

To connect your postal scale:

Use Your Postal Scale

After connecting your postal scale, Stamps.com can automatically read and display package weights. The following tips can help you get accurate weight readings and resolve common scale issues.

Zero or Tare Your Scale

A properly calibrated scale should display a weight of zero when nothing is on the scale. If your scale displays an incorrect or negative weight, try one of the following:

  • Turn the scale off and back on.

  • Press the Zero or Tare button on the scale.

Weigh Items Inside a Container

To weigh the contents of a box without including the weight of the box:

  1. Place the empty box on the scale.

  2. Press the Tare button or restart the scale.

  3. Add the contents to the box.

The scale will display only the weight of the contents.

After removing the box, reset the scale to zero again if it displays a negative weight.

Hold a Weight Reading

If a package blocks the scale display, you can hold the current weight using one of the following methods:

  • Select Weigh in Stamps.com. This imports the current weight and disables Auto, preserving the displayed weight.

  • Press the Hold button on your scale, if available. Press the button again to release the held weight.

Troubleshoot Weight Fluctuations

If the weight reading changes unexpectedly:

  • Place the scale on a flat, stable surface free from vibration.

  • Check the scale for damage, including the weighing platform and support feet.

  • Keep the scale away from appliances that may cause electrical interference, such as refrigerators, photocopiers, and microwave ovens.

Recommended Digital Scales

Stamps.com recommends using the ONYX digital scale that best suits your shipping needs. There are three ONYX digital scales available on Stamps.com Supplies.
